A lot of noise was made when Priyanka Upendra gifted her husband Upendra a Jaguar. The press went gaga over it and it even became a topic of discussion among ordinary people. But Upendra isn’t exactly bowled over by the gift.
“My birthday celebrations usually begin at midnight and go on till the next day. I dedicate my birthday to my fans who come from across the State with cakes and gifts. Nothing compares to the love of fans,” says Upendra, who celebrated his birthday on September 18. “But the Jaguar was a surprise for me. In fact, I’ve always wondered why we need so many cars, since it’s difficult to move around the City. Nevertheless, I am touched,” he adds.
Upendra may be one of the hottest selling names in Sandalwood. But he is best known for his directorial ventures and has announced his next one. “The script and cast are still being finalised. But the posters are sketched to be catchy. It’s abstract and I want people to read into it and interpret it. People will know why we’ve created such an abstract poster once the film is released,” he reasons.
There’s no subject that Upendra hasn’t explored as a director and actor but he is keen on making an animated film. “Movies like ‘Lion King’ will always have an audience. An animated movie needs a big budget. I haven’t ruled out working in an animated film,” he says.
Upendra has written the story and screenplay for his next movie, Topiwala, which is about the black money in Swiss banks. “We’re not being judgemental but the comedy has a very strong message,” says Upendra, who not only wears colourful costumes but has also experimented with his looks in the movie.
Kalpana, which is remake of the Tamil film Kanchana, is a comedy-horror. “It’s a comedy which has the right doses of horror added for that extra punch,” he notes.
Upendra and Ramesh Aravind will come together for the first time in ‘Super Kick’. “Ramesh will direct me in this film. We never worked together but I’ve always admired his work and talent,” observes Upendra, who concedes that churning out something new for the fans every time is a huge challenge.
