Upendra-HD Kumaraswamy bury the hatchet!

It was a pleasant surprise for the media men and those, who saw Upendra and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy sharing a stage at the audio launch function of forthcoming Kannada movie Aarakshaka. The most interesting part of the story is that they were comfortable with each other's company and posed for the camera with ease, which made the onlookers to believe that they have buried the hatchet.

If you are a fresher to the Kannada film industry, then we have to remind you several incidents of the past happened between the duo. Upendra, who often takes contemporary issues in his films, took potshots at JD(S) government in his movie A. Though, the movie did not have direct references to any individual, it was said that some portions of the movie were loosely based on the life of the then chief minister of Karnataka.

In the later years, HD Kumaraswamy, who was a film distributor and producer before plunging into politics, directly criticised the Real Star's blockbuster movie Upendra by making Jitendra, which was a satire on Uppi's movie.

The story is not over yet. In 2010, Upendra's Super had indirect reference to Kumaraswamy's resort politics and his affair with actress Radhika Shetty, who is now married to HDK. However, now, their friendly gesture has paved way for various rumours including Uppi's possible political entry by joining hands with the JD(S). Well, they say there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics and in film industry. This seems to be true again.

In an interview recently actress Priyanka Upendra recalled the days of meeting superstar husband Upendra on the sets of ‘Raa’ Telugu first. The occasion was the wedding anniversary celebration held on ‘Kalpana’ launch day at Kanteerava studios.

It was first meeting at Ramoji Rao film city with Upendra and after so many years I was there at the shooting time of ‘Karari Veera Sura Sundarangi’ with Upendra at the same place. It was such a coincidence recalls Priyanka Upendra.

 A radio jackey Srinivas alias Srini is heading the megaphone for ‘Topiwala’ for starring Upendra in the lead role. the muhurut for the film is taking place in January 2012 and after completing ‘Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi and ‘Kalpana’ Upendra joins the team of ‘Topiwala’.

Direcftor Srini made a brillinant ‘Simply Kail-awesome’ (on the works of TP Kailasam) and that was received well as a one hour short film.

The story of the film said to be on the Swizz Bank account and some political references suits the image of Upendra says Srini. Bhavana of ‘Jackie’ has been selected as heroine.

KP Srikanth who is getting ready ‘Shiva’ is the producer of ‘Topiwala’. As the title indicates the protagonist will be a trickster in the cinema. V Harikrishna is scoring the music for this film.

We had ‘Makmal Topi’ from Master Hirannaiah that was a huge hit on stage.

A film festival that has it all

The latest fever going around town is of the filmy kind. With the Bangalore International Film Festival taking the city by storm, Bangaloreans are feasting their eyes and minds on some of the finest movies from all over the world. Movie buffs and serious cinema watchers get a taste of International, national and local cinema in theatres close to their homes. Jurors from all over the world will judge the best films in the International Competition, Asian Competition, Indian Cinema, Kannada Cinema, Cinema of the World, Retrospective Cinema by film-makers like Hsiao Hsien Hou, Theo Angelopoulus, Micheal Cacoyannis, Dariush Mehrjui, G Arvindan and Puttanna Kanagal, and 12 other categories. The highlight of the film festival is the Nostalgia series where vintage film classics are screened. The Political Cinema category too has brought a whole new dimension to the film festival. Also, there is special focus on Polish and Egyptians films this year. Indeed it has something for all and yet stands out from other festivals.

The festival that started on Friday gradually picked up pace by the weekend. The fervour surrounding the festival is for all to see. The weekend came and went and the theatres still continue running houseful and enquiry for passes have mounted. Students and even elderly citizens are seen watching movies in huge numbers. For the convenience of the public, daily passes are sold for four shows of the day. Stalls have been put up at all venues to sell on the spot passes. There are nine screens — Lido (MG Road), Inox (JP Nagar), GM Rejoyz (Malleshwaram), Information Department (Infantry Road), Suchitra (Banaskankari) and Badami House (NR Square) spread across Bangalore so that viewers need not waste time commuting. Prabha Narayanan, a painter and an ardent movie lover who has been catching almost four shows per day says that she is delighted that the film festival is in town. “It has been a superb experience so far. We should have such films screened more often,” she says. Her favourite movie which she is sure to win an award is Sara, an Iranian movie directed by Dariush Mehrjui which she thinks is a radical film. “About 85 per cent of the films screened are good, the rest are a struggle to watch; they are either too realistic or too vague. It could be abstract or politics of the world which some may not understand,” she says. She is happy with the arrangements and wishes that the movies could have been screened on a rotational basis in all the screens. On an average, 12 Indian movies are being screened per week with Tulu Cinema making a foray with Shivadwaj Shetty’s Gaggara. In the retrospective series Puttanna Kanagal’s classics such as Gejje Pooje, Nagara Haavu and many others are being showcased. Many Indian classics like Chidambaram (Malayalam) and Sant Tukaram (Marathi) will be screened. In the Kannada Cinema category, movies like National Award winner Puttakana Highway and even Upendra’s Super will be screened. Friday to Monday the afternoon show at Information Department was dedicated to David Cronenberg’s movies under the Master Classes Category. The best films have been chosen to be screened twice in the course of the week. Some of them are Elena (Russia), Biutiful (Mexican), Bettada Jeeva (India) and Beaufort (Israel). With two days left for the festival to end, cinema lovers will be rushing to cram in as many movies as possible.

Mega Set for 'Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi'

The master craftsman in erecting opulent sets known very well in South India Kiran has made a grand Indra Loka set at Dr Ramoji Rao Film City and shooting on this set is held till 20th of this month in the direction of Suresh Krissna.

The film ‘Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi’ made at cost of Rs.15 crore in 3D technology with over 120 layers of colors has been the most fascinating fact says Upendra speaking to this correspondent at ‘Kalpana’ muhuruth on Wednesday morning.

We have lost interest in 2D and 3D is such an absorbing work done by the technicians of ‘My Dear Chota Chetan’ informed Upendra who is playing the common man role in the Munirathna Naidu production. Upendra as a super star is not directing ‘Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi’ but he has penned the story, screenplay, dialogues for the film.

There is one song for ‘Yamaraja’ that is played by Ambarish in the film. The sets of ‘Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi’ are similar in grandeur of Babruvahana and Bhaktha Prahallada it is learnt.

Actress of high reputation Ramya plays the daughter of Indra in this film. Sridhar, Chetan, Tennis Krishna, Doddanna and others are in the cast. Rockey Rajesh is the stunt director and Chinni Prakash is the choreographer

On 20th of this month the special day at the shooting location in Dr Ramoji Rao film city on this Indraloka set. Upendra invited the media friends to take part in the shooting.

As the 4th Bengaluru International Film Festival will be in progress the plans are there to make a visit for one day on 20th of this month.

Uppi impresed with 3D - next is Topiwala

The super star of Kannada cinema acting in 'Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi' is impressed with the 3D style of shooting. I am stunned and bowled over the speed of work carried out at Ramoji Rao studio for this film of Munirathna Naidu.

Upendra explained the layers and colors that are visible to the eyes at the time of shooting for 3d technology. The makers of 'My Dear Chota Chetan' are with latest gadgets for this big venture Kannada film says Upendra speaking to a few journalists at the time of 'Kalpana' launch.

The future is 3D and theatres have to equip with such state of the art technology feels Upendra. On 'Indra Loka' set created by Kiran the shooting in complete 3D cinema 'Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi' with Ramya as female lead is in progress till 20th of this month.

Producer Munirathna Naidu is investing nearly 15 crores of rupees on this Suresh Krissna direction. Upendra has penned the story, screenplay and dialogues for this film.

The next film launch of super star Upendra is 'Topiwala' in the direction of Seenu. He has finished 'Arakshaka', 'Godfather' is at the final stages, 'Kalpana' is one schedule film of 45 days in 125 films director Ramnarayan.

ಮುಹೂರ್ತದ ವೇಳೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಉಪ್ಪಿ "ಮೂಲ ಚಿತ್ರ 'ಕಾಂಚನಾ' ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಬೀರಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು 'ಕಲ್ಪನಾ' ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತರಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಮೂಲ ಚಿತ್ರದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರನ್ನು ನಾನು ಬಹಳ ಇಷ್ಟಪಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಕಾರಣ ಅವರ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನವಲ್ಲ, ಅವರ ಮನೋಜ್ಞ ನಟನೆ" ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

I am in nine of 10 films of Ramanarayanan in Kannada. I could not make it in his last Kannada film 'Bombat Car' stated Shruthi. Upendra says Kalpana will be a different film for him Kannada film super star Upendra and his wife Priyanka celebrated their marriage anniversary on Wednesday during the launch of the actor’s new film Kalpana which was launched today at Kanteerava studios.

For the film’s director Ram Narayan this film is 125th directorial venture though he himself admitted that this may be probably his first film as he is happy to work with such an unassuming Super Star like Upendra.

After the usual muhurath, Upendra addressed the press meet along with Ram Narayan, Actress Shruthi to brief about the film.

“I was really thrilled after seeing the film Kanchana. Raghava Lawrence has done a great job as a director of this film. The film has humor and horror elements along with a good message in the climax sequence. Ram Narayan is a veteran film director but his simplicity has bowled me.
