No ‘Basavanna’, no ‘Brahmana’, film may release without title (video)

Upendra-starrer has run into a series of controversies

There seems to be no end to the controversy surrounding latest film starring Upendra and directed by Srinivasa Raju, maker of Dandupalya.
With the earlier title Basavanna running in to rough weather, the director wanted to name the film Brahmana. However, that too has now landed in controversy, with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) refusing to give permission for the second title.
Frustrated with the controversy surrounding the title, C.R. Manohar, producer of the film, has decided to release the movie without a title, if he cannot get the right one.
Actor Upendra said that everyone was reacting without knowing the content of the film and there was no question of hurting anybody. “Is this an issue to be debated in the Assembly?” he asked.
Arguing in favour of releasing the film without a title, he said that was the only option left. Mr. Manohar said the film would be released without title, in case he does not get an “apt” title.
From the day of is launch, the film landed in controversy because of its title Basavanna, which was seen as a reference to 12th century social reformer. The poster showing a person in yoga posture with a gun beside him stirred a controversy.
Mr. Manohar had clarified that the film name was not based on the life of 12th century social reformer and promised to remove the pistol from the poster. The issue was discussed in the Assembly too and resulted in the government seeking change in title.
Describing the government’s direction to KFCC to withdraw the title as “curtailing freedom of expression”, Mr. Srinivasa Raju asked: “What was the need to raise the issue in the session, when several other burning issues are plaguing the State?”
Refusing to divulge content of the film, he said the symbols used in the poster had a relevance for the film.

Upendra's Basavanna Controversy Becomes Political Issue (video)

Upendra once again has come under criticism from religious group. The Real Star's latest movie Basavanna has landed in trouble over the title of the movie. Not only religious group but this time political parties have jumped their guns over the movie. The title Basavanna, as we all know, is the popular name of a social reformer from Karnataka. The latest posters of the movie show Upendra in red-colour dhoti with the sacred thread (Janivara in Kannada) which ran from left shoulder to waist, along with rudraksha beads, vibhuti and a sword. This has made people to raise objection over the title. Former Chief Minister BS Yeddurappa has said that it is an insult to Basavanna. It has hurt the sentiments of Lingayat community. He demanded the government to intervene and resolve the issue. He also demanded a debate over the controversy in the Karnataka assembly. Before BS Yeddurappa, it was ex-minister Govinda Karajola, who raised the issue on the floors of the assembly.

How Big The Issue Is!
Govinda Karajola explained to the assembly that how big the issue is and what it has done to the community. He was later backed by sizeable number of leaders from Lingayat community.
The Political Debate Today
Bowing down to their demands, Speaker Kaagodu Thimmappa gave permission to debate for 30 minutes in the assembly under Rule 69. The issue will be debated today (July 18).

Who'll Have The Last Laugh?
It is probably for the first time where a Kannada movie is being debated in the assembly. Will Upendra get justice, or politicians have the last laugh? Only time can answer. But Uppi will be hoping to get support from MLAs - Ambareesh, Umashree, HD Kumaraswamy, Madhu Bangarappa, CP Yogeshwar, Munirathna and Ashok Kheny, who have film connection.

Uppi Speaks
On the other end, Upendra came out and said, "I would like to say one thing. I would ask the director to change the title if the film hurts at least one person. The movie has nothing to do with Basavanna."

Why Only Uppi Movies?
He adds, "Earlier, many have done movies with mythical names but my movie Katariveera Surasundarangi was singled out." Meanwhile, religious leaders from the community have demanded the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to scrap the title.

Ragini Dwivedi
Basavanna also stars Ragini Dwivedi. It is directed by Srinivasa Raju of Dandupalya fame and it is an action film revolving around rowdyism.

'Brahma' Back from Malaysia

Super star Upendra and Pranitha starring 'Brahma' that has so far completed 40 percent of shooting returned from 15 days Malaysia shoot. It is not just song shoot but talkie portions and two action scenes with foreign juniors were pressed in to action by director R Chandru. A GoPro camera was smashed in the busy roads of Kaula Lumpur recalled director R Chandru. In the real traffic with police protection the shoot was held successfully. There were some dangerous moments in the action shoot adds Chandru.

According to Upendra real star of Kannada cinema director R Chandru should be in Mumbai cinema industry. He thinks big and works hard to get it. It is not that easy to shoot in the busy traffic at a foreign location. One thing I have learnt from Chandru is that he knows how to take the film to the people. I am inquired on this film 'Brahma' quite often says Upendra.

Actress Praneetha feels this film has international feel. Using the foreign juniors for shoot and making it big gives a strong feel of Hollywood says Praneetha. Shooting till 3 am in front of Twin Tower in the role of a foreign girl, I thoroughly enjoyed working for this film says Praneetha.

The Hollywood atmosphere was created and roping in foreign extras for the film was not easy task she stated. We have shot for the film early morning 3 am and I play a western girl in this film she stated.

Normally foreign shoot means only songs. It is not just that in 'Brahma'- we have used for action and talkie portions mentioned cameraman Shekar Chandra.

Producer Manjunath Babu is quite happy with the proceedings of the film shoot.
