Upendra's been basking in the success of his latest directorial, Super, which has just become sweeter because of the positive feedback the movie has got from his fans and the film fraternity at large.
But he's is not planning to sit back and enjoy the laurels that are coming his way. "People have liked my movie-making and are encouraging me to do more," he says. "If I sit quietly now, I will hurt my fans. Which is why I want to start another project immediately, and I will make an announcement about this shortly," he adds.
As for encouragement from his peers, Upendra is happy to report that he has been getting plenty from that quarter too. "There's this notion that actors don't get along, but Shivarajkumar, Sudeep and Puneet Rajkumar called and gave me excellent feedback about my movie. I was very happy to hear this from them," says Uppi, adding that one of the reasons he's directing another film is because of the appreciation he received from these stalwarts.
Upendra, however, remains tight-lipped about the other details of the project — "I might don the actor's hat again or I might direct another hero," he says cryptically. But when asked about his political aspirations, Upendra has plenty to say. "I've been wanting to enter politics for a while, but my intention is not to make money," he says, "It's only to serve the people. As an ordinary person, I can only make requests; as a politician I can give orders." His character in Super eventually becomes Chief Minister; is that his goal in real life as well? "When I made the film, I didn't think much about it," he replies, "But when people saw the film, they felt I should become a politician in real life too."
Stepping into politics does not mean that Uppi will say good-bye to films. "Filmmaking and being a hero is my passion, which will never die. Filmi people who have become politicians are doing a lot for the industry. My contribution will definitely be high," he affirms. The actor-director, however, won't reveal when he will enter politics and which party he plans to join. "There's a lot for me to learn. Let me instil confidence in people about me before I do that," he says as he signs off.
